Before 1976, the Inner Dirt Track was a turf course and it was known as the Main Turf Course, with the lone present turf course bearing the name of the Inner Turf Course; following the conclusion of racing in 1975 the grass on the Main Turf Course was uprooted and the Inner Dirt Track took its place to permit year-round racing. (In the first few years after Aqueduct was rebuilt in 1959 the track lay idle from early November until April 1; by 1971 this period had been reduced to from shortly before Christmas until March 1, and in the latter year off-track betting began in New York City, creating a demand for horse racing to be contested in the region throughout the year).

YONKERS — Video slot machines have brought Yonkers Raceway back to life, with a $4 billion casino operation that has rejuvenated the dying harness track. One year after it reopened with a Vegas-style casino, Empire City at Yonkers Raceway is a cash machine, drawing more than 90,000 patrons a week and netting nearly $40 million a month. Though that's less than raceway officials had hoped for, the video slots have radically transformed a 97-acre property that spent several years on the selling block. "We would've sold to one of those developers," said Bob Galterio, raceway general manager. "If we were not allowed to have done this, the raceway would be some sort of mixed development with retail, housing and office space," he said, likening it to a controversial $600 million mega-project slated elsewhere in Yonkers. "We would've been Ridge Hill." Local traffic concerns remain, as do doubts about the full benefit to Yonkers schools. But the long-debated slots are doing the one thing they were promised to do: make money. Yonkers Raceway is already the most lucrative among eight horse racing tracks statewide featuring video lottery terminals, accounting for 49 percent of the slot machine revenue played at all the tracks combined last month. In the past six months, the raceway also has produced half of the money the tracks are required to contribute to an education fund overseen by the New York Lottery. About $471.2 million was bet on its machines in September alone, with 92 percent of that going back to players in payouts. Of the rest, $22.9 million was earmarked for education, $9.94 million for the track as a commission, $1.53 million for marketing and another $3.82 million for state lottery administration. And Yonkers Raceway's financial growth is destined to continue: Raceway operators have installed 5,478 video slot machines but are approved for 7,500. Uncertain future Yonkers Raceway was in rapid decline before the video slots, according to statistics from the Raceway and the New York State Racing and Wagering Board.
