TM Segovia's Aqueduct And Alcázar Draw The Visitors By Habeeb Salloum From the city's luxurious Parador, I gazed across the valley at the city of Segovia - a living replica of medieval Castilian towns. The Gothic spires of its castle and cathedral, and the Romanesque towers of its churches, pointing upward from these compact collection of medieval structures, created a postcard picture of a town leaping out of history.
The old city has a spectacular situation on top of a long ridge, apparently highest at the west where the Alcázar looks out over the neighbouring countryside (actually highest where the cathedral stands). You will probably begin your visit at the Plaza Mayor, though, where the bus from the train or bus station will leave you, or somewhere near the aqueduct if you walk or drive in.

It is probably the best and more complete aqueduct remaining from those built at Roman Empire age, not only because of its good state of preservation, but only for its design, dimensions and concept . It has suffered several partial restores, rebuildings and, even, partial elimination of ashlars, specially cornices.
Great gallery, beautiful pictures! It's fun to see another's point of view on places I visited. I think the Segovia Cathedral is my favorite... spectacular!

Name The Aqueduct of Segovia Description Among the large number of monuments in Segovia, the Roman aqueduct is the most remarkable, a magnificent piece of Roman engineering which dates back to the 1st century A. D., which carried water to Segovia from the source of the River Frio.
One of the greatest surviving monuments of Roman engineering, this aqueduct stretches from the walls of the old town to the edges of Sierra de Guadarrama. It is about 2950 feet long although the section where the arches are divided in two levels is about 900 feet.
History As it lacks a legible inscription (one was apparently located in aqueduct's attic , or top portion), the date of construction cannot be definitively determined. Researchers have placed it between the second half of the 1st Century AD and the early years of the 2nd Century— during the reign of either Emperor Vespasian or Nerva .
