This review is from: American Architecture: A History (Icon Editions) (Hardcover) This extensive survey of American architectural history and styles covers works from pre-historic to modern times, covering the major developments which affected American-built cities and towns over a broad period of time. From evolving regional styles to period architecture and the development of urban landscapes, American Architecture: A History provides chapters packed with analysis and interpretation of American buildings and styles.
To limit modern architecture to that which seems to embody what are called modernistic tendencies would be not only foolish, but arrogant. The architecture which to-day is regarded as unprogressive, a generation from now may be in the van, and no man, be he layman, critic, or designer, can pass an infallible judgment, or even make a good guess, as to what is to be the architecture of the future.

This review is from: Identifying American Architecture: A Pictorial Guide to Styles and Terms, 1600-1945, Revised Edition (American Association for State and Local History Book Series) (Paperback) While other "field guides" to American architecture provide more details or bigger/better photos than this one, a key part of what makes 'Identifying American Architecture' so good is what it DOESN'T tell you. That is, it focuses on naming basic (and often not-so-basic) architectural elements in a broad range of styles for you, without the encyclopedic details of each style's history and genealogy, which can be researched elsewhere.

The metropolitan Detroit area was also home to some of the largest private fortunes assembled in the modern age. All of this is visible in the cutting-edge structures built to serve the needs of the modern business community that was committed to innovation and new processes. Detroit's public buildings—its museums, libraries, schools, and monuments—are second to none in terms of their overall scale, materials, and detailing. Hotels, stores, theaters, and other commercial venues display a breezy cosmopolitanism consistent with the city's position as both a technology hub and a crossroads of immigration. Yet despite this remarkable legacy, many of downtown Detroit's architecturally significant buildings are under threat of demolition and have been placed on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 2005 list of America's most endangered landmarks. American City: Detroit Architecture, 1845–2005 is intended to showcase a Detroit that might surprise many readers and bring long-overdue attention to the city's heritage of fine design. In 90 stunning full-color photographs, the book documents the innovative features of fifty of Detroit's most impressive buildings. An introductory essay offers an overview of the city's architectural history and outlines the social forces and the personalities that helped shape the city's built environment.
