What is Critical Architecture Theory? The result of the convergence of deconstruction and architecture during the 1980s was " critical architecture theory ." In 1990 this phenomenon became a subject of debate after the architectural historian Sylvia Lavin suggested that "critical theory" was nothing other than a brand of literary theory and criticism that had lost its original object, namely literature, "through a progress of progressive expansion" in which critical theory "appropriated in its domain the results of research in all sorts of disciplines…." 1 In Lavin's opinion, because "an explicit aim of critical theory was to undermine the tyranny of Western philosophical tradition," this brand of theory, which had "a ring of resistance to it, an aura of the avant-garde, of the radical," appeared "to offer architecture the radical weaponry once offered by a flat roof and a little exposed concrete." But Lavin concluded that in applying the techniques of literary criticism to architectural literature, "critical architecture theory" had lost its own object, namely architecture, and architecture's concern with ideas about form.

In the discussion of architecture, the prevailing sentiment of the past three decades has been that cultural production can no longer be understood to arise spontaneously, as a matter of social course, but is constructed through ever more self-conscious theoretical procedures. The development of interpretive modes of various stripespoststructuralist, Marxian, phenomenological, psychoanalytic, as well as others dissenting or eccentrichas given scholars a range of tools for rethinking architecture in relation to other fields and for reasserting architecture's general importance in intellectual discourse.

In Zachman's opinion, the single factor that makes his framework unique is that each element on either axis of the matrix is explicitly distinguishable from all other elements on that axis. The representations in each cell of the matrix are not merely successive levels of increasing detail, but actually are different representations-different in context, meaning, motivation, and use.
Nineteenth century A vibrant strain of Neoclassicism , inherited from Marc-Antoine Laugier 's seminal Essai, provided the foundation for two generations of international activity around the core themes of classicism, primitivism and a "return to Nature." Reaction against the dominance of neo-classical architecture came to the fore in the 1820s with Augustus Pugin providing a moral and theoretical basis for Gothic Revival architecture , and in the 1840s John Ruskin developed this ethos. Towards the end of the century, there occurred a blossoming of theoretical activity.

Great for learning more in depth about architecture theory A bit of a tough read though. Published 15 months ago by Mara Saxer
This review is from: Architecture Theory since 1968 (Paperback) I'm a graduate student in architecture, and for a theory course we read selections from this book, and two other similar theory anthologies, Kate Nesbitt's "Theorizing a New Agenda for Architecture," and Niel Leach's "Rethinking Architecture." All books attempt to do roughly the same thing, and I have to say the Hays (this one) was the one I got the least out of. I'll start with one minor criticism, which wouldn't condemn the book, but is extremely infuriating: the page numbers are printed on the inside upper corners of the pages near the spine, not the outside upper corners as is standard practice in books.
