New elements were introduced into the Indian architecture that include: use of shapes (instead of natural forms); inscriptional art using decorative lettering or calligraphy; inlay decoration and use of coloured marble, painted plaster and brilliantly glazed tiles.

Allama Iqbal Since the establishment of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture some two decades ago as an endeavour of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, there has been increasing awareness and appreciation of Islamic Art and Architecture. As is known to most of us, the winners of the Seventh Cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture were announced at the ceremony held on 9th October,l998 in the gardens of Alhambra, itself one of famous monuments of Islamic Architecture in the West.
Calligraphic design is omnipresent in Islamic art, and is usually expressed in a mix of Qur'anic verses and historical proclamations. Two of the main scripts involved are the symbolic kufic and naskh scripts, which can be found adorning and enhancing the visual appeal of the walls and domes of buildings, the sides of minbars , and so on.
