BACKGROUND AND INSPIRATION: Early forms of modern houses included rare examples of the prairie style, designed to blend into the prairie landscapes of the Midwest, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. The American foursquare and craftsman bungalows, distant cousins to the Prairie style, gave us more common forms of early modern housing styles up to and including World War One.

Print this section While the International Style continued to dominate the world of architecture through the 1960s, only in the 1970s did it become apparent that the International Style and modern architecture were not necessarily the same. Indeed, the work of such diverse architects as Aalto, Barragán, Tange, and many others reveals that modern architecture has never been limited to a single style.

Modern Australian architecture Modern Australian architecture reflects both new ways of thinking and new forms of expression as well as the fact that in the twentieth century buildings did not need to be made of stone any more. Buildings could be made of steel and glass which opened up endless possibilities for space and light, and moving between the outside and the inside. It was a conviction that what man's eye seeks in our era, in our time, is not the ponderous solidity of traditional architecture where everything was built to four walls around a room and spaces that were finite. But rather our eyes seek transparency, lightness... being able to look through things. Harry Seidler , Australian architect The use of new materials and technology coincided with a flood of utopian ideas. For much of the 20th century, architects fought over what it meant to be modern. Some argued that while the early modern architecture was dominated by physical function, it also needed to be balanced by an emotional, spiritual and social sense.

Modern Architecture The course embraces the last century and a half in the history of architecture, when traditional fables began to yield to more scientifically conceived ideas of architecture’s role in the creation of civilizations, when architecture began to contribute more directly to social and philosophical systems, and when expanding print and media culture accelerated the migration of ideas. In this course, major centers of urban culture and their characteristic buildings alternate with attention to individual concepts and their impact in an increasingly interconnected and global culture of architecture.

Modern Architecture Modern Architecture is the term given to the range of approaches in architecture, first appearing at the beginning of the 20th century, that rejected historic precedent as a source of architectural inspiration and considered function as the prime generator of form, employing materials and technology in a honest way. This short definition is to a certain extent inadequate because there are a range of interpretations as to the origin and rise of Modern Architecture, and what constitutes Modern Architecture itself, depending on the frame of reference of the historian.
