Giotto has become the symbol of a profound renewal in the history of Western figurative arts, and of the first radical renewal since ancient Greece. "He converted the art of painting from Greek to Latin and brought in the modern era" - this is Cennino Cennini's synthesis fifty years after Giotto's death, underscoring the revolutionary character of Giotto's painting. Born in 1267, he must have been active before the last decade of thirteenth century.

English: The so-called " Sarcofago di Stilicone " (" Stilicho 's sarcophagus") is an Ancient Roman paleochristian sarcophagus dating from around 385 AD, sculpted for a high-rank military authority and his wife. It is preserved beneath the pulpit of Sant'Ambrogio basilica in Milan , Italy, in the same spot where it was originally placed (which makes it the only original part of the paleochristian original basilica still in place).
Sant' Ambrogio Basilica The gabled form of the façade on two superimposed loggias, a narthex, and an upper loggia of five diminishing arches, seems to be framed at the base by the arcades of the atrium itself; while the higher part is flanked by the double profile of the bell towers, the southern and shorter one is called the Torre dei Monaci, and dates from the 9 th century, while the second one, incorporating delicate pilasters and small arches, is known as the Torre dei Canonici and was built between 1128 and 1144.
According to Clemens Jöckle, this is the first example of an inventio or find of martyrs' bodies. The event was attested at any rate by both Paulinus of Nola and Augustine: Ambrose found them on June 17, 386 the eve of the dedication of this church, and would eventually himself choose to be buried with them.

Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore This wonderful basilica, located opposite the Roman columns that are the only remains of a third-century temple, includes many different architectural styles, due to the various renovations that the building has undergone. The main elements are Paleo-christian (for example the mosaics) but other more recent styles also stand out, including ones from 1600 (the dome) to 1800 (the façade).

Restructured in the Romanesque style in 1000 and reconsecrated in 2060 by Pope Nicholas II, San Lorenzo came under Medici protection at the beginning of the fifteenth century thanks to the patrician Giovanni di Bicci (1360-1429) who, beginning in 1418 sponsored the reconstruction and enlargement of the church entrusting the direction of the construction to the genius Fillipo Brunelleschi (it was finished by Antonio Manetti).

Theatrical Release Information Editorial Reviews Amazon.com Taped in 1998 at the Basilica di S. Ambrogio in Milan, this Christmas concert starring José Carreras with David Gimenez conducting the Arturo Toscanini Orchestra includes a few sentimental religious favorites, notably César Franck's "Panis Angelicus," Schubert's "Ave Maria" (in which he gets the words mixed up), the anonymous "Adeste Fideles," "Silent Night" sung in Italian, and "The Lord's Prayer," sung (in English) as an encore and, for some viewers, probably worth the price of the disc.

Founded in 379 as Basilica Martyrum on the burial spot of the martyrs Gervase e Protase, in 397 the basilica also became a mausoleum for the city's bishop and future patron saint. Because of this - a testimony to Milanese ecclesiastical independence, and its ancient traditions - the church is one of the most symbolic sites in the city.

Ambrogio The exhibit layout opens with a group of artworks that come from the former Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio Museum, which has been closed down, and which had been the location of a series of objects that were mainly connected with the history of the basilica or Milan’s patron saint. These included the great clypeus with the Bust of St Ambrose giving blessing , attributed to the tenth century, which is now present in the Diocesan Museum, symbolically shown at the entrance of the first room.
The Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio was founded by Bishop Ambrogio, or Ambrose as he is known in English, in 384 AD. The Basilica was consecrated upon the discovery of the remains of the martyrs Gervasius and Protasius in a nearby burial ground.
