San Juan Capistrano, CA… Few things are more frustrating than bad sound, and for church leaders at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano, a Catholic Church a short hop North of San Diego, the inability to consistently obtain clear audio at manageable levels was an issue that could no longer be ignored. Designed to coincide with the installation of a new and incredibly ornate, gold retablo (an artistic wall or surface) altar, and ambo (lectern)—all of which were hand crafted in Spain for the church—officials decided an upgraded sound system would also be deployed.
About Carmel Mission's Basilica Interior The original reredos was destroyed when the last portion of ceiling collapsed in 1851, and from the fragments and descriptions it was ascertained that it may have resembled the one at Mission Dolores which was constructed of earlier gilded portions of massive golden wood altarpieces being disassembled at the Mother Church of San Fernando in Mexico City due to the change in architectural fashions. The present furnishings of the church are mainly the originals as far as the statues, paintings and other artifacts are concerned.

History The settlement was named for St. Francis of Assisi , the founder of the Franciscan Order , but was also commonly known as "Mission Dolores" owing to the presence of a nearby creek named Arroyo de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores ( Our Lady of Dolores Creek ), or "Stream of Our Lady of Sorrows." A member of the Anza Expedition, Friar Font, writes about the spot chosen for the Mission: We rode about one league to the east [from the Presidio], one to the east-southeast, and one to the southeast, going over hills covered with bushes, and over valleys of good land.
Nicknamed "The Mother of Missions," Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala was originally built on Presidio Hill, but in 1774 was moved to its present location for better water and farming conditions.<p> One year after its move, however, Indians burned and destroyed the building. The second structure suffered damage from an earthquake in 1803.
