Bungalow House Plan Details Born in southern California in the early 1900's, the Bungalow house plan was inspired by a quirky combination of the English Arts and Crafts movement and Far Eastern wooden architecture and quickly became one of the most popular small house styles in the country. With their low-pitched roofs with exposed rafters and rustic wood, stone or stucco siding, and welcoming front porches, these homes were designed to be grounded in the philosophy of simple practicality.

Rating: - Disappointing I didn't find the book to be helpful or even enjoyable. Little to no information about transitioning an older Bungalow as I had understood the book would contain.
Like the Arts and Crafts and Mission schools that influenced it, Bungalow style emphasizes artisanship, local materials, and rustic detail. Asian influences are common, particularly in the California bungalows of Greene and Greene.

Synopses & Reviews Publisher Comments: Beyond the Bungalow, the newest book from renowned designer and Arts & Crafts expert Paul Duchscherer, celebrates the larger members of the Arts & Crafts family, and pays tribute to their remarkable artistic beauty, craftsmanship, and diversity of style. Widely acclaimed as America's favorite Arts & Crafts Home, the term bungalow may bring a specific image to mind, but it really is one part of a much larger family.
Title: Bungalow Details: Exterior ISBN: 1586853066 From the Publisher: In Bungalow Details: Exterior you'll learn of the elements that make up the exterior of the whole experience: sleeping porches, knee braces, river rock columns, pillars, three-part front windows, low-pitched roofs, shingle siding, art glass light fixtures, clinker brick chimneys, pergolas, exposed rafter tails, and an extensive use of wood, stone, and brick. None of these things by themselves characterize a bungalow, but it is often the way these details and others are combined-and the philosophy they represent-that makes a house an authentic Arts and Crafts bungalow.
Most of the original interiors of all the Spanish Eclectic homes that I have been in including my own 1928 really don't differ too much from other Arts & Crafts homes of the era. Typically one would find less wood ornamentation and more detailed plaster work.
In her Bungalow books Jane Powell has come close to inventing a new genre: the architectural book that is actually fun to read. The latest (Bungalow Details:Interior)is no exception.

Alicia Alverez wanted to create a modern second-floor living space while maintaining the characteristics of her Chicago bungalow. To accomplish this, the architect designed a sensitive dormer to increase the livable space of the bungalow.
By A Customer Whether one is studying architecture for the beauty and style of design or as a career, Inside the Bungalow provides a great overview of styles and techniques as well as history. A textbook for those who are seeking a career in interior design or restoration. The beauty of the photography and insight of both the author and the photographer into the feeling and warmth portrayed by each individual home's interior style and visual statement is amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed just browsing through the pages and while there, learned more than I had expected about the importance of the bungalow in America's history. Although this might well be a coffee table book, it is more importantly an accurate and informative study for those who follow this architectural style and are enamored by its colorful history.
