Ron and Rhonda Schafer, (plus their three boys; Nicholas (14), Nathan (11), Scott (7) and Hannah (no, not a sister; a Golden Retriever) arrived in Leesburg on July 15, 1999. Upon coming to Leesburg, the Schafers had been pastoring in churches in Florida for over fifteen years. This was to be an unusual church plant. There were no contacts or a core group. So in November '99, the Schafers began a Bible study in their home. This small group, which usually consisted of the Schafers, and two other families, continued to meet for the next year. Growth was slow. In August of 2000, Phil and Pam McClain (Brandon 15, Drew 10, Selina 7), a family the Schafers had known from Florida, living in Illinois, felt God’s call on their lives and moved to Leesburg to help plant this church. December 2000 brought the first public event for Harvest Chapel, a Christmas music/dessert night at Catoctin Elementary School. Approximately 105 people attended.
