The collision between Catholic ideals, principles, and attitudes and The Vagina Monologues (see sidebar) raises the question, not what harm the play will cause at Notre Dame, but what at Notre Dame has caused the play. The successful insistence of elements of the faculty that Father Jenkins sanction the play, coupled with the dramatic shrinking of Catholic faculty representation (see graph) , point to the answer: the mounting secularization of the University.

I’ve contrived a way of pumping the bed up a bit so that, with a long reach, I can get to my typewriter. . . . my mind. . . .my my fingers. Two things prompt this note The first is that whenever my cancer acts up. . . . and it is certainly “acting up” now, I turn inward a bit.

In the beginning, his institution's only admissions requirement was the ability to pay-some payment, at least, and not necessarily in currency or coin; livestock or the services of a tradesman or some other "in-kind" payment also were cheerfully accepted.

As this sentinel is perpetually protective of the Grotto, so, too, have Notre Dame alumni always been protective of the schools formative heritage as it is adapted to the challenges of each age.
