Thursday, October 18, 2007 The Arts and Crafts movement began in the 1880s in Great Britain as a reaction to Victorian excess, and it was embraced in America at the turn of the 20th century. Leading American voices included furniture maker and designer Gustav Stickley and architects Charles and Henry Greene.
Early in the 20th century, Central New York became an important center for the American Arts and Crafts Movement. The Arts and Crafts Society of Central New York is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study of the Arts and Crafts Movement through a schedule of lectures, symposia, tours and other educational programs for the purpose of increasing awareness of this rich cultural heritage and stimulating interest in its preservation.

Origins and key principles The Arts and Crafts Movement began primarily as a search for authentic and meaningful styles for the 19th century and as a reaction to the eclectic revival of historic styles of the Victorian era and to "soulless" machine-made production aided by the Industrial Revolution . Considering the machine to be the root cause of all repetitive and mundane evils, some of the protagonists of this movement turned entirely away from the use of machines and towards handcraft, which tended to concentrate their productions in the hands of sensitive but well-heeled patrons.

Customer Reviews Dover's mission furniture catalogs While Charles Limbert is less well known than the Stickley brothers, some of his furniture was, to the European eye, even better. Sadly, the line drawings of the original catalog are extremely ugly (see nos 79 and 80 which are reproduced as photographs on the cover, you would scarcely recognise them!)

Terminology Arts and crafts also refers to the Arts and Crafts movement , a late 19th century design reform and social movement. Its proponents were motivated by the ideals of William Morris and John Ruskin , who proposed that in pre-industustrial societies, such as the European Middle Ages , people had achieved fulfillment through the creative process of handicrafts.

In the second half of the 19th century, a design and social rebellion began to gather momentum in Europe and America. In reaction to the heavy ornamentation of the Victorian period, a new movement began that embraced simplicity, clean lines, and good design.

The Arts and Crafts Movement The Arts and Crafts movement initially developed in England during the latter half of the 19th century. Subsequently this style was taken up by American designers, with somewhat different results.
