The Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus. 'It ranks with the greatest hooks ever written in the English language.
Lawrence kept extensive notes throughout the course of his involvement in the Revolt. He began work on a clean narrative in the first half of 1919 while in Paris for the peace conference and, later that summer, while back in Egypt .
In 1919 in Paris, Lawrence had begun drafting the book he had been determined to write about his wartime experiences. The title, first used for a manuscript he had burned in 1914 about seven Eastern cities, was derived from a verse in the Book of Proverbs: ' Wisdom hath builded a house: she hath hewn out her seven pillars .' This metaphor was reflected in the structure of the new work: its introduction was entitled ' Foundations of a Revolt' and its final section was entitled ' The House is Perfected' .
