home / funding announcements / archive / victoria commissions LATE SCULPTOR'S WORK RECOGNISED IN NEW GRANTS Date: 7/3/2000 The completion of a project by renowned sculptor Akio Makigawa, who passed away late last year, is one of six projects to attract funding totalling $525,000 under Arts Victoria's Victoria Commissions program, the State Government announced today. The Minister for the Arts, Mary Delahunty, said she was both pleased and saddened that the Makigawa project, which is in partnership with the City of Ballarat, was one of only six projects to attract funding under the Victoria Commissions program. "The Government's commitment to this project will ensure that one of the last art works by a Melbourne based sculptor of international renown, with an extraordinary record of achievement, will be completed and installed permanently at the entrance to a new cultural precinct in Ballarat,” Ms Delahunty said. "This will enable the people of Ballarat and visitors to the region to appreciate and marvel at Makigawa’s art for many years to come".

Ricardo Barros: Facing Sculpture Sep 1, 2007 – Jan 13, 2008 (opening reception, Thursday, Sep 6) I first met Ricardo Barros on August 4, 1999, when he came to DeCordova Museum to show his recent body of photographic portraits to me and our Director of Curatorial Affairs, Rachel Rosenfield Lafo. We had not known Ricardo or his work prior to this visit, but our curiosity was piqued by his subject matter —contemporary sculptors.
Zimbabwe’s sculptural landscape changes By Celia Winter-Irving BY the end of 2006 we can see changes in Zimbabwe’s sculptural landscape. Like all landscapes change in a sculptural landscape is defined by new formations of physical features, changes in the physical and built environment, and changes in locations of peoples. One such place is Tengenenge where sculpture is as endemic as the grasses which flare red under the setting sun, the mountains of the Great Dyke with their flinty grey eyes which look down upon Tengenenge and the elephants with their shapes to be seen from a distance. Another such place is Dominic’s Studio where a concentration of sculptors create rather than produce sculptures which represent the sculptors’ feel’ for African traditions, yet their firm location in the global world. But over recent months new ‘locations’ have emerged for Zimbabwe’s sculptures working in stone, locations which are fast bringing individual sculptors out of hiding, into the open with their ideas, their ways of working and their market. One such location is the Chitungwiza Arts Centre. In Chitungwiza for some time stone sculpture has been a cottage industry, a home grown product produced in the back yard, and sold from the garage. The Chitungwiza Arts Centre has become the definite landmark for stone sculpture in the township. The centre has become the ‘mother body’ for sculptors working in stone in Chitungwiza. Like all good mothers the Chitungwiza Arts Centre cares for an extended family, and here sculpting are widows, single mothers and formerly unemployed young men who would stroll the streets, eye the girls and haunt the pubs at night.

I am a jack of many trades, including programming and design , but my passion is art, specifically drawing and sculpting the hu In my view, the figure is not merely a subject of art, but it is also a form of art, meaning that in the right hands, how one sculpts or draws a figure becomes a potent vehicle for personal and intellectual expression.

For not even sculptors and painters, unless they undertake an extended course in connoisseurship, scrutinizing the styles of the old masters at length -- not even they can readily identify them and confidently say that this statue is by Polykleitos , this by Pheidias , this by Alkamenes , and that that painting is by Polygnotos , that by Timanthes , that by Parrhasios. So it is with literature ...

May 2001 Old Landscape: New Garden Sculpture at Seawinds, Purves Road, Arthurs Seat March 11 - May 12, 2001 {Sue Boucher} It is in the outdoor setting that sculpture is ultimately accessible to a mass audience, and three outdoor sculpture exhibitions within as many months certainly indicates a renewed interest in the three-dimensional object beyond the ubiquitous white cube. This range of opportunities to exhibit should excite many an active sculptor wanting to partake in the ultimate challenge of dealing with scale against the O’ Grande One .
