Officials at Time Warner Cable and two technology suppliers had to scramble the past two weeks to fix a bug causing the picture on the TV screens of many digital-video-recorder users to freeze. The glitch - which Time Warner said affected subscribers with Scientific-Atlanta Inc. “8000-level” DVRs running the “Passport Echo” interactive program guide from Pioneer Digital Technologies - generated a backlash for the burgeoning DVR service in New York City, the MSO’s largest division. It afflicted an unknown number of customers in New York and some other undisclosed markets. Officials at Time Warner, S-A and Pioneer had not resolved the issue by Thursday, but Time Warner spokesman Keith Cocozza said in an e-mail Friday that the glitch had been repaired. After saying that it received dozens of complaints from viewers, major New York broadcaster WNBC-TV ran a segment Oct. 8 in which one anchor intoned, “Don’t give up your VCR just yet. ” The station quoted one subscriber in the report who said, “I call the company [Time Warner], they tell me to pull the plug and try again, and the same thing happens over and over again. So I get frustrated and just don’t use it. I have my old faithful VCR.

Time Warner launches S-A DVR on Motorola system Jeff Baumgartner CedMagazine.com - September 02, 2004 Following a successful trial, Time Warner Cable has deployed "overlay" technology from Scientific-Atlanta in Houston that will enable the MSO to offer S-A digital boxes with on-board DVR and high-definition television capabilities. The prime significance of the move is that Time Warner Cable is deploying the boxes in a system that was initially outfitted with Motorola Broadband 's MediaCipher conditional access (CA) technology.
The company rightly points out that the ability to fast-forward through ads is not the only feature that consumers love about DVRs. They also love the time-shifting: The ability to watch your shows when you want to watch them.

Time Warner Cable is gradually rolling out a new feature called "Start Over. " Available to its digital cable customers in certain areas, it allows viewers to backtrack to the beginning of selected shows and provides limited DVR-like functionality.

More Time Warner DVR Fakery Filed by Dave Zatz under DVR, Industry, Media Aug 15 2007 Last year, Time Warner Cable brought us “ Start Over ” which allows one to start a television show from the beginning (while it’s still being broadcast) if, say, you’re running late. I guess Start Over is such a success (available in 23 states, 8 more by the end of the year) that TWC is expanding their fake DVR-OnDemand hybrid : The service, called Look Back, will let cable customers watch certain shows later on that they missed, just the way a digital video recorder does, but without an extra monthly fee.
"He came and he walked in, fiddled around with some wires and said that everything was OK - that there was no problem and we just needed to not record as much, which is ridiculous because that's why we have the DVR, to record as much as we want," said John Maybee, another Time Warner customer. There have been many complaints across the city about the freezing problem with Time Warner service.
