By itself, showcasing mid-major men's basketball teams to a national audience in the thick of the regular season doesn't necessarily translate into must-see TV, regardless of how competitive or compelling the game might actually be. Now do the same thing with the backing of ESPN - the most powerful sports enterprise in the stratosphere - and dress it up with a jazzy phrase like "Bracket Buster Saturday," and suddenly there's the potential for a ratings bonanza and unprecedented excitement for the schools involved.

Handicapping Notebook : 2/21/2007 JIM HURLEY'S HANDICAPPING NOTEBOOK DID ANYONE IN THE MAC OR COLONIAL GET HELPED BY BRACKET BUSTERS? Both the Mid American and Colonial conferences have bought into the Bracket Busters concept in full force. It's hard to see how much the leagues are really getting out of the exposure from year to year. The TV ratings aren't that great for the limited number of games that do air. And, you've got just a good a chance of losing as you do winning a game like this. Then again, many point to George Mason's bracket buster win last year over Wichita State as the victory that earned them an invitation to the Big Dance. The only reason that could be true is that George Mason lost TWO TIMES to Hofstra soon afterward. A Mason invitation would have been a slam dunk without that temporary fade out. We were going top put the MAC and Colonial "in focus" for you today anyway as we rotate amongst the board leagues to get you ready for these final weeks of action. It made sense to see if bracket buster action might have helped or hurt some of the key teams in each conference.
