Federer has previously used Kooyong - an invitation-only event stacked with top players attracted by guaranteed matches - to fine tune his Australian Open campaigns. Tournament director Colin Stubs said there was a possibility of Federer having a match later this week should a vacancy become available.
Federer isn’t worried, saying he wouldn’t have hung around Melbourne if he didn’t believe he could win the Australian Open, which starts Monday. “I definitely think it’s going to turn for the good and I’ll be 100 percent, really, before the tournament,” Federer said.
"It's a Grand Slam final," she said. " I wasn't going to let my lead go....

No, not the clear Melbourne sky, though the warm but windy weather provided good first day conditions at about 80 degrees, and no, I’m not talking about the brilliant blue hue of the official’s uniforms. I speak of course, of the new ‘Plexicushion’ playing surface.
(01-13) 04:00 PST Melbourne, Australia - Without the glare of the cameras, or the roar of an appreciative crowd, Roger Federer shanked forehands and hit some backhands long inside Rod Laver Arena. His girlfriend, Mirka Vavrinec, was with him at Melbourne Park's center court, wearing flip-flops in the intense heat and collecting wayward balls as Federer hit with Swiss Davis Cup captain Serevin Luethi.
Source: Associated Press (newser) – Maria Sharapova polished her tennis resume and commercial appeal today by dunking Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 6-3, to win the Australian Open women's singles title. The 20-year-old dominated from the outset, controlling key points and letting up only once, with a poor service game in the first set that let her Serb opponent tie it 4-4. • Sharapova plowed through the tournament without losing a single set, defeating No. 1 Justine Henin and No. 3 Jelena Jankovic along the way. Fourth-seeded Ivanovic's loss was her second Grand Slam defeat; she seemed to wilt under big-game pressure, committing 33 unforced errors. Sharapova had lost the 2007 Aussie tourney final to American Serena Williams. There have been a number of Australian films set in the uni that I attended and it has always driven me to the point of distraction watching them, as in the “That’s not the arts faculty, that’s the physics building” type of thing. Perhaps I have a problem with suspending disbelief.

Sadly, I doubt the problem is the language – it’s just the final straw. The US market, in particular, just doesn’t want to deal with different cultures.
