NEWS SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT BUSINESS LIFESTYLES OPINION CLASSIFIED SEARCH Captain's Blog Sports columnist Kirk Wessler / Journal Star Bracket Buster equals Good For Everybody When I hear Bradley fans, Missouri Valley fans, criticize the Bracket Buster on grounds that the series potentially does them more harm than good, one word jumps into my mind, billboard-size: HYPOCRITES! Fans outside the BCS cabal bemoan—and rightfully so—the refusal of marquee programs to schedule games against the likes of the Valley, the Colonial, the Horizon, the West Coast, especially on a home-and-home basis. There are two big excuses the BCS bunch uses: money and “we have everything to lose and nothing to gain. ” And that’s all they are: Excuses. Well, you can’t bust the BCS chops if you turn around and look down your nose at some other non-BCS league or team as being an unworthy opponent. That’s not to say there aren’t some puds out there you’d rather not play, because they’ll drag down your schedule strength. But I am dismayed by people who have felt the sting of BCS snubs, yet are all too willing to cop the same elitist attitude when it comes to their own schedule. Wake up! The Bracket Buster has been, and continues to be, a good thing. Talk to administrators and coaches in these leagues, as I have. Talk to Doug Elgin, the MVC commish who might rightly be called the Father of the Buster.
BracketBusters has grown so big (100 teams) that there are nearly as many schools taking part as there are items available on the title sponsor's auction Web site. It's become so humongous a spectacle that it's transcended a single Saturday to become a multiday mid-major festival: the Burning Man of college hoops.
