Each different material offers its own list of performance benefits and concerns, and to realize the pros fully while minimizing the cons, contractors should evaluate each material carefully. Natural Wood This material should be familiar to any contractor. Consumers often love the rich colors, unique grain characteristics and inherent “warmth” natural wood provides. To perform well in exterior applications, natural wood should either be painted with a high-grade exterior paint or stain, pressure-treated, or it should be a species that is naturally resistant to weather and insects. Decks most commonly are made from pressure-treated lumber, but often species such as cedar, redwood or exotic hardwoods are substituted for the decking and railing components, sometimes at substantially higher costs. “Naturally durable woods such as Western red cedar present a more natural image in and around gardens, decks and outdoor areas,” says Dann Dickey of Weyerhaeuser CedarOne. “Cedar is a great material for homeowners because it is quite durable and blends nicely with the natural surroundings. ” Other projects such as arbors, trellises and planter boxes are perfect for weather-resistant wood species, he says. Any natural wood is subject to warping, twisting, cracking and splintering as it ages and weathers, so regular maintenance may be required—even with interior applications. “Builders and consumers like natural wood because it is readily available, familiar and typically less expensive initially,” says Bob Fuller, research engineer with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center.
