Wednesday November 08 2006 Backfill: Subtle Soffit Vent We pay as much attention to the quality of our exterior trim as we do the interior trim on the upscale houses we build, so we don't want to see ugly strip vents or round metal button vents messing up the soffits. Instead, we've come up with a nice-looking detail that provides plenty of roof ventilation without calling attention to itself.

Roof repairs typically involve replacing damaged shingles and rusted flashing, but the overhang of a roof is often the first area to succumb to rot, peeling paint and other weather-related problems. The good news is, unlike most roof repairs, you can fix an eave or gable overhang (rake) without climbing onto the roof.

How to Frame a Soffit By eHow Home & Garden Editor Rate: (0 Ratings) If you're building a house or an addition and have reached the point where the walls and roof are framed, it's time to frame the soffits. A soffit is built out from the ends of the roof rafters and the tops of the walls where they meet the rafters.
The soffit is the material that covers the underside of an overhang on a roof. The soffit board is already in place under the eaves (the horizontal overhang along the side of the structure, see Instructions - The roof frame page 14) so there is only the soffit under the gable overhang to put up.
New drywall is necessary anytime new framing or plumbing goes in. It's always better to get that taken care of before you frame in any new soffits (unless the soffits go up against finished walls and ceilings).
Gary works out the angle were the garage soffit meets the soffit over the front porch. Note the vent hole in one board.
This detail is taken from the following Best Practice Guide: Brick Veneer Steel Stud Cold Soffit — Detail 11 Warm soffits are difficult to build so that they are airtight. They make expensive places to put water piping in danger of freezing. Except when there is no option, the insulation of a soffit should be attached directly to the underside of the floor structure. The large volume of the soffit, added to the wall cavity volume below, would be likely to prevent pressure equalization of the cavity in the recessed wall. In this case, the dimensions of the recess provide shelter and eliminate the need for a rain screen in the recess. Otherwise, a horizontal compartment barrier is required between the wall cavity and the soffit cavity. Detail 11 — Cold Soffit
