Ridge vents should never be combined with gable-end vents, since this combination will allow, under certain wind conditions, the infiltration of wind-bourne rain or snow into the attic, through the ridge vent. If a ridge vent is used, it should be in combination with a soffit vent system, allowing the same net-free area of air infiltration at the soffits as is being exhausted out of the ridge vent.

If installing on dimensional or architectural shingles on new construction, leave felt underlayment about 6" long at roof ridge and fold back under the vent so that vent is essentially installed on top of felt over the shingles. If re-roofing, caulk between low areas of shingle and baffle of vent after installation.

Ridge Vents A ridge vent runs the entire length of the roof peak, blending into the roofline for a more attractive home. Years of research prove that a ridge vent with external baffles and an internal weather filter, combined with undereave venting, is the most efficient system you can install.
Roof and Attic Ventilation Why Do You Need Proper Ventilation? Roofs and attic spaces have two major enemies in all homes: heat build-up and moisture accumulation.
Note that screens and louvers on vents reduce venting capacity, so openings must be increased proportionately. Use a combination of vents, half located low on the roof and half higher up, so air can flow in one and out the other.

Shows how to check the attic for moisture problems, baffle heat-producing fixtures, identify and protect knob and tube wiring, prevent insulation from contacting chimneys and flues, vent exhaust fans to outside, baffle soffit and eave vents, and insulate water pipes and heating and cooling ducts that run through the attic.
Roof Ventilation Shinglevent Research proves the effectiveness of Shinglevent's wind baffle in preventing rain and snow infiltration. The effectiveness of Shinglevent's integral external wind baffles in preventing weather infiltration has been documented in independent testing by Construction Research Laboratory, Inc in Miami, FL.

Ridgemaster PLUS's patented baffle system works efficiently regardless of wind direction or speed, excels in keeping out weather and insects, and its patented structural ribs make it virtually crush proof. Ridgemaster PLUS accomodates asphalt, fibreglass or wood shingles, slate or metal roofs.
Soffit is intake and the end of the bathroom vent pipe is hanging inside the soffit & not the the exterior. They make a nice soffit vent termination connector that allows the vent pipe to terminate outside and below the soffit. When this happens, the air is dissapated to the exterior rather than being sucked up along the sheathing causing this problem. The definition of outside or exterior is the issue. This is not allowed. Like I said, I see this all the time in homes that are 5-10 years old and it is the same situation all the time. The bathroom vent termintates inside the soffit and not to the exterior. - Jeff Remas REMAS Inspections www.

VENTILATING YOUR ATTIC One of the most common problems I encounter in the majority of my home inspections is the lack of attic ventilation. Attic / roof ventilation is probably the least understood requirement necessary for achieving a healthy home in Massachusetts.

The benefits of good attic ventilation cannot be overemphasized: a properly ventilated attic will save hundreds of dollars every year in energy costs and can save thousands of dollars in the premature aging and damage to the structural integrity of roofing components. Save on Energy Costs Superheated summer air or cold, moist winter air that is trapped in an improperly or poorly vented attic penetrates ceiling insulation and seeps into the living space below, causing air conditioners and heaters to work overtime.
Check the Intake Ventilation by Paul Scelsi Published July 2003 If you’re not convinced how important intake venting is to an attic ventilation system consider this: It’s the single biggest reason for most of the attic ventilation callbacks we see and hear about. Not the exhaust vents.
Whenever there is a soffit, use it. If a house has a soffit, use it to install the intake vents whether they are continuous soffit vents or individual rectangular undereave vents.
The proper and most efficient way to ventilate an attic is to install continuous soffit or eave vents for proper intake air and continuous ridge vents for proper exhaust ventilation. The soffit vents should not be blocked with insulation or other materials at the eave.

I just discovered that the insulation contractor that insulated my new house about 2 1/2 years ago failed to use any baffling when he blew in the attic insulation. Needless to say, most of my soffit vents are covered with insulation.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to baffled air vents located between adjacent roof rafters of a structure, and particularly to baffled air vents having improved, installed convective air flow readings. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION With an increasing emphasis on energy efficiency, attic insulation has often been supplemented by blown, loose-fill insulation, or by additional or thicker insulation bats to prevent heat loss in the winter and cool air loss in the summer.

Roof Ventilation for Coastal Homes Faced with driving rain that leaks through attic vents, plus uncompromising codes, a Rhode Island builder relies on his ingenuity by Mike Guertin In the days after a nor'easter or tropical storm hits Rhode Island's south-facing coast, I invariably receive a flurry of calls to investigate "leaking roofs." Most of those "leaks" are the result of wind-driven rain entering the vents high on the roof typically through the ridge vent and gable-end vents, though occasionally through the soffit vents as well.
