FOR RELEASE: May 1, 2001 SB-01-09 UNAUTHORIZED WELDING IN LAUNDRY ROOM LED TO FIRE ON CRUISE SHIP ECSTASY, SAFETY BOARD FINDS WASHINGTON, D. C. - Unauthorized welding by crewmembers in the main laundry ignited a large accumulation of lint in the ventilation system, leading to a major fire aboard a cruise ship that injured 23 people and resulted in damages exceeding $17 million, the National Transportation Safety Board has found.
The Weld-Master ventilation system by XeteX saves more fuel and provides cleaner breathing air in a welding plant than conventional "Mixed Air" heaters. Welding facilities installed with each method of smoke removal are illustrated below, to show the difference in performance.
Arc welding is a safe process when sufficient measures are taken to protect the welder from potential hazards and when proper operating practices are followed. Major hazards welders can encounter if these dangers are overlooked include fumes and gases, arc rays and sparks, and electric shock.
JP Jensen Ventilation - Underground Ventilation JP Jensen Ventilation, with head offices in Malmoe, Sweden, is part of the AB Chr Jensen group. The company was formed in 1879, and is one of the oldest companies in the world specializing in processing PVC-coated material.
    (5) You must determine which potentially hazardous materials are associated with welding and cutting and inform employees through signs, labels or other appropriate means.     (a) Welding may produce fumes and gases hazardous to health.

Welding - Health and Safety in Part 8: Local Exhaust Ventilation for Welding Processes Chapter 17 of TN7 and the Fume Minimisation Guidelines cover this topic fully. These notes aim to give a brief overview of welding ventilation best practice.
TOOLBOXTOPICS.COM Company Name _ Job Name _ Date_ VENTILATION - AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF WELDING SAFETY - The fumes produced in a welding operation can be hazardous to the welder or workers in the near vicinity. Reducing the exposure to fumes through an effective local exhaust or area ventilation system is the first line of defense in preventing discomfort or illnesses from toxic welding fumes.
Industrial Air Ventilation involves the use of a clean air supply and an exhaust ventilation system to control emissions, airborne particulate exposure and chemical hazards. Ventilation Systems are beneficial in confined spaces and facilities with inefficient ventilation equipment.

Press Release Release date: November 27, 2007 Secure, Clean, and FDA Compliant Welding To meet the increasing requirements for ultrasonic assembly processes in clean environments, Herrmann Ultrasonics, Inc. introduces the MEDIALOG, which is based on the successful and widely established DIALOG welding systems. The new MEDIALOG welding machines are mostly used by medical device manufacturers and other plastic assembly manufacturers with special requirements. The machines were designed with a new smooth finish and clean room friendly surfaces to meet the lower particle requirements. Incoming air is filtered to a higher standard. In addition the exhaust air is collected and can be directed through the existing ventilation system. The non-contact capacity start buttons ensure a safe two-handed machine operation. The MEDIALOG machines come in two sizes with welding performances up to 5,000 watt with welding frequencies of 20, 30 or 35 kHz. The Windows® XP based system guarantees a user-friendly operator interface guide and observation of the complete welding process shown in detail. Herrmann Ultrasonics offers a target performance comparison between the reference weld and the actual weld on a 12" color graphic touch display.
It is important to first review the emissions that need to be captured and the available filtration options. Depending on the air quality issue at hand, different filters may be needed to accomplish the desired effect.
<< Return to Last Page In response to an abatement action required by Tennessee Occupational Health and Safety Administration (TOSHA), Fisher & Arnold (F&A) completed an industrial hygiene study to assess employee exposure to welding fumes at a West Tennessee industry. F&A collected industrial hygiene sampling in the welding area to verify that a newly installed local ventilation system was effective.
Air Systems International Fume-Air™ 750 Portable HEPA Filtered Welding Fume Extractor Ideal for the capture of hexavalent chromium and harmful compounds that are byproducts of welding on stainless steel or painted surfaces. The Fume-Air 750 helps meet OSHA standards limiting hex chrome to 5µg/cubic meter.
Air Systems International Venturi-Style Pneumatic Air Blowers Venturi-Style Blowers ventilate explosive and hazardous vapors and fumes safely and effectively. Often called "Air Horns", they are constructed of lightweight galvanized steel with a cast aluminum base.
Where can I find some general guideline for welding ventilation? Different ventilation strategies may be needed in each case to remove air contaminants from the welder's breathing zone.
Depending on how much metal fabrication and welding is performed, operations lend themselves to source capture – using a hood in close proximity to the work – or to ambient air intake filtration – where plant fumes, dust and welding emissions are filtered out together. The most efficient method of welding fume and extraction in the machine or welding shop, particularly in the breathing zone of the welder, is local exhaust ventilation which captures the contaminant at or near the source.
A manufacturing plant was experiencing difficulties managing fumes released by robotic and manual welding processes. Synergetics staff were asked to provide recommendations for a ventilation system which could meet stringent occupational exposure limits without disrupting the production operations.

As with dilution ventilation, makeup air must be provided to replace the air exhausted in order for the system to operate properly. Figure 2 illustrates the basic parts of a local exhaust system. Figure 2.
The Industrial Maid LLC Ventilation Hood Systems use a three stage filter configuration. A 2" baffle filter is used for spark arrestance (for fire safety issues), a 4" pleated pre-filter separates out the larger particles and a final multi-pocket high efficiency bag filter takes out all the smaller welding smoke & fume particulate.

1915.51(a) The provisions of this section shall apply to all ship repairing, shipbuilding, and shipbreaking operations; except that paragraph (e) of this section shall apply only to ship repairing and shipbuilding. Paragraph (g) of this section shall apply only to ship repairing.
Ventilation should be used to remove harmful fumes and gases. Local exhaust ventilation, which removes the fumes and gases at their source, is the most effective method.
The Industrial Clean Air Network exists to help industries and commercial interests throughout North America find local access to quality air services. ICAN Distributors sell, install, and service dust collectors, air cleaners, mist units, fume extractors, vehicle exhaust systems, and other industrial ventilation products.

Stage of Development The method and system have been tested in a workshop where various types of welding equipment are used. The ventilation system can be applied to any premises where welding is carried out.
College receives $250,000 grant for welding program Coffeyville Community College (CCC) has received a $250,000 State Technology Equipment Grant approved by the Kansas Board of Regents. "The grant funding will be focused on the installation of a ventilation system for the current welding facility to meet the new OSHA air quality standards,” said Marlon Thornburg, Vice President for Innovation and Business Initiatives.

Stainless steel ducting with flexible NS2 (PVC) tubing, rugged square steel tubing, counterbalancing adjustable springs, stainless steel fume hood with non-conductive phenolic plastic positioning handle and safety screen.
There are two kinds of reasons that make it necessary and advisable to use special systems for extraction and filtering of fumes on welding stations: obligatory, technical and economical. Separate regulations and norms determine admissible quantity of welding dust that can be emitted into atmosphere.
