Pre-hung windows are blocked and braced to prevent damage during shipping; in most cases, you should not remove the bracing until the window is fastened in place. After you have installed the unit, be sure the sash operates freely (for an operable window) before you install the interior trim or caulk the exterior.

When I install window casing I make a little sketch on a piece of paper (3x5 file cards are convenient) and write down the inside dimensions of the casing rectangle. Then I add twice the trim width to arrive at the outside dimensions, because it is far easier to measure the long dimensions of a mitered piece.

What I would do in your circumstances is hold the trim on the window, draw a line along the edge, set a circular saw to the depth of the siding and trim the siding back so you can mount the trim.

For a basic rectangular room, start with the most visible moldings, the ones opposite the entry door. The first moldings will be square-cut where they meet adjoining walls.
